Storm Can’t Stop Harlem: The Battle For Hope 2 – Uniting Harlem Against Gun Violence On Sunday, August 17, 2025, the “Plaza” of the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building in Harlem came alive with the sound of gloves, cheers, and community pride. The Battle For Hope 2, sanctioned by USA Boxing Metro and hosted by Harlem House of Champions in partnership with Silent Voices United Inc. and the office of Councilman Yusef Salaam, brought together athletes, families, and supporters in a powerful stand against gun violence. ✨ Highlights: National Anthem sung by Troy Weekes (2005 Showtime at the Apollo runner-up) 🎤 Special support from Assemblymember Al Taylor, NYCHA President & Tenant Advocate Daniel Barber, Jackie Rowe-Adam, Founder of Harlem Mothers Save, Barbara Atkinson, President of 125th Street BID, Taste of Seafood, Giovanni NYC and Sylvia’s Restaurant. Fighters battled under the hot Harlem sun until Hurricane Erin rolled in during the 13th bout ⛈️, forcing officials to stop the final two matches for safety. 💪🏾 Though the storm cut the fights short, Harlem’s fighting spirit never wavered. The energy in the room was electrifying, the bouts were powerful, and the crowd’s enthusiastic response proved that boxing is not only alive in Harlem—it’s necessary. We were honored to be joined by so many incredible community leaders and champions of the people: Deputy Borough President Keshia James-Sutton opened the evening with a heartfelt welcome on behalf of the Borough President’s Office. The crowd was moved by James “Petawane” Burris, Harlem’s own and former lead singer of the legendary R&B group Double Exposure, who delivered a powerful performance of the Black National Anthem. Also in attendance were Council Member Yusef Salaam and Raymond Santana of the Exonerated 5, whose presence brought deep meaning and inspiration. The community was further uplifted by Jackie Rowe-Adams, President and Co-Founder of Harlem Mothers & Fathers S.A.V.E., representatives from Community Board 10, and Shatic Mitchell, Director of Civic Engagement at the Central Park Conservancy. Gina C. Williams, Bronx Borough Advocate for Community Engagement from the Office of NYC Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams, was also in attendance showing support. We were proud to welcome Kai Cogsville of Harlem Defends, whose advocacy continues to uplift and protect Harlem’s youth and families. Also present was renowned boxer Eric Lamar Kelly, a former four-time national champion and Olympic alternate. The legacy of Harlem boxing was further honored by the proud attendance of the grandchildren of two-time featherweight world champion Joseph “Sandy” Saddler. Because of your support, we raised essential scholarship funds for our youth programs at Harlem House of Champions and Abyssinian Baptist Church’s Youth on the Move in the Community. This landmark event is made possible by the Apollo’s Culture Forward Program, which has opened doors for small community-focused nonprofits to bring meaningful cultural events to Harlem. The Halloween R Us Children’s Monster Ball is more than just a Halloween party—it’s a safe, inclusive space where children can experience the joy of Halloween while learning essential safety skills. The Apollo Theater’s Culture Forward Program has allowed Silent Voices United Inc. to host this event in a professional, iconic setting, complete with high-quality lighting, sound, and a dedicated staff, ensuring an unforgettable experience for Harlem’s youngest residents. POST-EVENT HIGHLIGHTS - THE BATTLE FOR HOPE BOXING SHOW NEW YORK, NY—AUGUST 28, 2024—The energy on Friday, August 23, was nothing short of electrifying as The Battle For Hope: Uniting Harlem Against Gun Violence, organized by Silent Voices United Inc. and Harlem House Of Champions Boxing Club, unfolded on the Plaza of the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building. Postponed due to rain on August 18, this highly anticipated show did not disappoint the hundreds of spectators who gathered for an evening of intense amateur boxing action. With 13 bouts of heart-pounding, gladiator-like competition, the fighters left everything in the ring. At times, the atmosphere was so intense that the crowd was on its feet, cheering, anticipating the next knockout. The show, sanctioned by USA Boxing Metro, was nothing short of a top-tier professional event, from start to finish. The evening started with a soulful rendition of the National Anthem played on the saxophone by jazz musician Keith Marrett, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening. Ringside, boxing legends like Lonnie Bradley, Iran "The Blade" Barkley, Aaron "Superman" Davis, Eric Kelly, Sandy Saddler's daughter, Vito Antuofermo, and world-renowned trainer Alexander "Elliot Ness" Newbold added a touch of prestige to the event. The guests were treated to exquisite hors d'oeuvres by Blvd Bistro, enhancing the already vibrant atmosphere. The championship belts, sponsored by Dr. Iesha Sekou of Street Corner Resources, a community-based anti-gang and gun violence organization, were awarded to the victorious fighters, each of whom demonstrated extraordinary skill and determination. Mayor Eric Adams, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, and New York State Senator Cordell Cleare presented proclamations to Harlem’s own trailblazing women in boxing, including Sparkle Lee, New York State's first female amateur and professional referee, Marian "Lady Tyger" Trimiar, the first woman to apply for and receive a NYS Athletic Boxing License, and USA Boxing Metro Vice-President Sonya Lamonakis. The City Council Office of Yusef Salaam also recognized community advocate Tiffany Fulton, celebrating her historic achievement of organizing the first all-female amateur-pro exhibitions on this very plaza two decades ago.
